The family and friends of the late John Thompson and DCU Business School are delighted to announce the John Thompson Scholarship for 2016.

Established in 2008, this scholarship fosters links between digital marketing and online journalism by encouraging graduates of business, journalism and more diverse educational backgrounds to study digital marketing integrated with an appreciation of media and online journalism.

John Thompson, former Chief Executive of Associated Newspapers Ireland, publishers of the Irish Daily Mail and Irish Mail on Sunday, former Managing Director of Independent Star Limited and publisher of the Irish Daily Star, believed that the disciplines of journalism and marketing reinforce each other in eliciting consumer engagement and paving the way for commercial success.

The bursary offers:

  • Full fees for a graduate taking DCU’s MSc in Digital Marketing
  • A small contribution towards books and study expenses
  • A two month internship with an Irish media organisation, organised under the auspices of the National Newspapers of Ireland

How to Apply:

Applicants should submit:

  • A CV
  • A statement of motivation and suitability for the scholarship (maximum of 250 words)
  • A written paper (maximum of 1,500 words) on the following topic:

The emergence of digital media has proven a challenge for traditional media. Suggest a marketing strategy to allow one traditional medium to position itself in changed markets.

Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of their application, presentation (based on the above) and interview.

Graduates of all higher education institutions in Ireland are eligible to apply. Applicants should hold a minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1 degree and should demonstrate a keen interest in and understanding of marketing, business, media and journalism.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the academic and other entry requirements of the respective DCU MSc Digital Marketing.
